Alamos, Sonora, Mexico
Often referred to as “Pueblo Magico”, Alamos is the jewel of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains and is the only official “colonial city” in northern Mexico.
Founded in 1684, the town is of traditional Spanish design with the plaza being the cultural centre. Most cultural events take place here or in front of the church which borders the plaza on the south.
Alamos is home to the Alfonso Ortiz Tirado Music Festival, an annual event which attracts performers both nationally and internationally. This is soon followed by the Alamos Film Festival, another annual event which brings themed presentations in film from around the world. It is common for Producers to accompany their films to this event.
Recently declared a National Monument, Alamos has an abundance of charming arches, facades, columns and portals that typify Colonial architecture.
The people of Alamos include the indigenous Mayo Indians and families of Spanish decent dating back to the 16th century.
